Visit the Wonders of Europe

Throughout history various lists have been compiled of the most remarkable man-made creations. Widely known became The Seven Wonders of the World of classical antiquity, but there are also more recent lists. Why not visit some wonders on your next Eurail trip?

Ancient Wonders

The seven wonders of classical antiquity included the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Temple of Artemis at Epheseus, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Mausoleum of Maussollos, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. Sadly only the pyramid of Giza survives until today.

New Wonders of the World

In July 2007 the results of the campaign The New 7 Wonders of the World were announced in Lisbon. There were more than 50 nominees situated in Europe, but only one made it to the top 7: the Colosseum in Rome. Of course the other nominees are still worth a visit!

Wonders in Europe

The website Euro One-Hundred recently organized an online election of the seven human-made constructions in Europe that can be considered to be Europe's Greatest Wonders. The wonders with the most votes were:

  • Acropolis (Athens, Greece)
  • Alhambra (Granada, Spain)
  • Cathedral of our Lady (Chartres, France)
  • Roman Roads (Rome, Italy)
  • Hagia Sophia (Istanbul, Turkey)
  • Saint Basil's Cathedral (Moscow, Russian Federation)
  • Stonehenge (Amesbury, United Kingdom)

Do you want a second opinion? Then take a look at the Top Ten Travel Wonders of Europe, compiled by 'travel wonder authority' Howard Hillman. He included the Fjords of Norway and the Canals of Venice amongst others.

More wonders

Various European countries have also compiled national lists of wonders, like Poland and Portugal.

In 2005 Time Magazine published a double issue about the Wonders of Europe, ranging from Norway's Hurtigruten Coastal Express cruise to Munich's Allianz Arena soccer stadium.

At the Wikipedia-page Wonders of the World you can find various other inspiring lists of wonders, including natural wonders and wonders of the industrial world.
