Things to do in Zagreb

Panorama view on Zagreb, Croatia

In Zagreb, you’ll find so many things to do and see, that you may have to delay your journey to the coast for a while. But it will be worth it. Zagreb is a treasure trove of culture, cuisine, art and history. Your Eurail journey wouldn’t be complete without a true exploration of this beautiful city.

Find some hallowed ground

The gothic and renaissance cathedrals of Zagreb are indescribable. Check out the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the surrounding Archiepiscopal Palace. After 25 years of restoration efforts, the 13th century gothic St. Mark’s Church is open to the public again, and well worth a visit.

Honor the past

Zagreb is a city of museums. Every topic is covered, and some of them shouldn’t be missed. Visit the Meštrović Studio, former workplace of the Croatian artist and home to his most exciting sculpture. Moderna Galerija Zagreb is home to 153 Croatian paintings and the exhibit covers 200 years of Croatian art. The Museum of the City of Zagreb will offer an interesting glimpse into the city’s complex history.

Dance (and drink) till you drop

Separated into Lower and Upper Zagreb, the two districts have their own unique attributes. While a great blend of shops, restaurants and businesses can be found in Lower Zagreb, you may want to head to Upper Zagreb to get the party started. The chic and trendy Tkalčićeva offers bars of every shape and size. But you won’t have to travel far in Zagreb to find your choice of watering holes, no matter where you are in the city.

Get your grub on

Although meat is the primary ingredient in many Croatian dishes, don’t underestimate their ability to grill the perfect veggies, as well. Whatever your particular taste, the special Croatian blend of Mediterranean and Eastern European delights are to be found throughout Zagreb. Ask the locals for the best recommendations.
