Bulgaria by train
Bulgaria’s railway network is extensive and has a long history. The first railway line opened on 1 August 1888. Now, the state-owned railway company BDZ has services to most major towns and cities. Due to the Balkan mountain range, traveling east-west by train is faster and easier than north-south. The two major train routes are Sofia - Varna and Sofia – Bourgas. Bulgaria is conveniently linked to almost all of its neighbouring countries by train.
