Ten things to experience in Finland

Senate Square

This historic neoclassical square in Helsinki is considered to be one of the finest of its kind in all of Europe. Here you can catch a glimpse of the famed Lutheran Cathedral (see number 2), the University building and, if you plan your vacation just right, the popular Helsinki festival.

The Lutheran Cathedral

Designed by Carl Ludwig Engel, this is one of Helsinki’s most famous landmarks, with its stark white façade and massive green dome overlooking the city. You can catch a glimpse inside, too, since the cathedral is open to the public daily.

The Island Fortress of Suomenlinna

Perched on an island at the entrance of Helsinki Harbor, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a top tourist attraction and a favorite of the locals. Suomenlinna itself is abundant in restaurants, cafés, museums and art galleries.

Turku Castle

The 13th-century city of Turku is the oldest in Finland and is known for its stunning, medieval grey stone castle. The historical museum of Turku is housed inside of the castle.

Old Rauma

This historic city center in the town of Rauma has one of the oldest harbors in the country, one of the narrowest streets and offers some amazing historical architecture. Be sure to also visit the Franciscan church and the town’s museum, located in the town hall.

The King's Road

This historic route dates back to the 13th century and runs between Oslo, Stockholm, Turku, Helsinki and St. Petersburg along the southern coastline. The route is dotted with historic castles, cottages, churches and iron mills.

Tampere

Take a trip to the 3rd largest city in the country, in Finnish Lakeland. Here you can visit the Sara Hildén Art Museum and the Särkänniemi Recreational Centre, featuring an amusement park, zoo, planetarium and more.

St. Olaf's Castle (Olavinlinna)

Located in Savonlinna, this fairytale castle dates back more than 500 years and is one of the country’s top tourist attractions. You can also tour a Russian Orthodox museum on the castle’s grounds.

Santa & his reindeer

Who knew  good ol’ St. Nick and his reindeer called Finland home? You can visit the jolly guy and the Santa Claus Workshop Village on the Arctic Circle, about 6.2 miles north of Rovaniemi.

Retretti Art Centre

Located in Punkaharju, this is one of the largest art centers in the Nordic Region. You will find the exhibitions stunning, as well as the underground caves. There’s also a concert hall and a restaurant.

When to travel to Finland

Summer is a great time to use your Finland rail pass and discover this great country, although a mid-spring visit may save you some money. Of course, if you want to have a Christmas/Santa experience, winter is your obvious choice.
