Ten things to experience in Luxembourg
Chateau de Vianden
Built between the 11th and 14th centuries, Vianden Castle was one of the biggest and most elegant feudal residences of the Romanesque and Gothic periods.
Casemates du Bock
These 17th-century defense galleries actually served as underground tunnels for Luxembourg residents during World War II. Today, you can take a guided tour – but be prepared for slippery surfaces, very steep stairs and extremely narrow staircases in the lower passages. Claustrophobic? Stay in the upper passages.
Pont Adolphe
Located in Luxembourg City, this arch bridge built in the early 1900s has become a symbol of Luxembourg’s independence and is one of the most popular attractions in the country
Vianden chairlift
This breathtaking lift in Vianden takes passenger up an unbelievable 1,400+ feet, resulting in the most magnificent views of the town, its castle and the river. It’s a four-minute ride up and a four-minute ride down.
St. Michael's Church
The site where Église Saint-Michel sits in Luxembourg City dates back to 987, but the church you’ll see was actually constructed in the late 17th century and features a myriad of archeological styles, including Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque.
Dent Creuse
This old castle whose name translates as "Hollow Tooth" was originally built in 965 AD, but over time this tower is the only part of the castle that survived. Perhaps the highlight of this attraction is the panoramic views of the towns below and the surrounding plateaus.
Palais Grand Ducal
The Palace of the Grand Dukes stands proudly in the heart of Old Town. Originally Luxembourg's city hall, this 16th century structure now serves as the official residence of the Grand Duke.
Cathédrale Notre-Dame
Located in Luxembourg City, the cornerstone of this church was laid in the early 17th century and is an example of beautiful Gothic and Renaissance architecture.
Müllerthal rock formations
A great place to stop during your Luxembourg train travel getaway is "Little Switzerland" or the Müllerthal. The stunning sandstone rock formations are a sight to see, as are the winding creeks, lakes, waterfalls and lush forests.
Whit Tuesday
Every year in the town of Echternach in Easter Luxembourg, the town attracts thousands of pilgrims from all over the world for a colorful Roman Catholic dancing procession honoring the patron saint of Luxembourg. Legends of miraculous healings in front of the saint’s sarcophagus in the 8th century inspired this annual tradition, which is something to see.
When to travel to Luxembourg?
So when is the best time to use that Luxembourg rail pass? With its icy cold temperatures, Luxembourg in the winter is not ideal. Plan your Luxembourg train travel getaway during spring-time, when flowers are blooming and festivals are in full swing.
