Ten things to experience in Portugal

Castelo de Sao Jorge

Located in Lisbon, this centuries-old fortress dates as far back as 500 AD. St. George’s Castle is not only rich in history, it offers gorgeous panoramic views of the River Tagus and the medieval district, which is spread out below it. Visitors can walk the esplanades and climb the ramparts.

Alfama

Once a private collection, this exhibition of works by Portuguese artists – and artists from around the globe – is one of the world’s finest. Egyptian, Greek, Islamic, Syrian, Chinese and Japanese art is among the treasures, as are two Rembrandts, a Rubens and a Renoir.

When to travel to Portugal
