Ten things to experience in Romania

Parliament Palace

In the center of Bucharest stands this stunning 3.76-million square-foot building, the largest building in the world after the U.S. Pentagon. The inside is just as stunning as the outside.

Arcul de Triumf

Built in 1922, Bucharest's version of the Arc de Triomphe is 85-feet high and boasts beautiful decorative sculptures by famous Romanian artists and an interior staircase that you can climb to the top. Don’t miss the glorious views of the city from atop the Arc!

Calea Victoriei

As the oldest street in Bucharest, built in the late 17th century, Victory Avenue is also quite possibly the most charming. You’ll feast your eyes on stunning buildings, including the Palatul Cantacuzino (see below), Revolution Square (see below), the National History Museum and more.

Palatul Cantacuzino

Cantacuzino Palace was home to one of the Prime Minister of Romania and one of the richest men in the country. It was completed in 1900 and features breathtaking mix of neoclassical and art nouveau elements. From its ornate wrought-iron doorway, guarded by two lions to its lovely arched windows and iron balconies, this former-residence-turned-museum is a must see during your Romania train travel getaway.

Revolution Square

Piata Revolutiei became famous worldwide during the dramatic televised revolution in 1989, but it has a history far beyond that. In the square is the former Royal Palace, which is now the National Art Museum, as well as the Romanian Athenaeum, lovely Kretzulescu Church and the historic Athenee Palace Hotel.

Dracula’s castle in Transylvania

This area is known for its stunning castles, but none are more famous than Bran Castle. Built in 1377 near Brasov, this castle features a gothic structure and is associated with Vlad Tepes, a 15th century prince, who was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. This area is also home to Brasov, Sibiu, and Sighisoara, some of Europe’s best-preserved medieval towns.

Painted Monasteries in Bucovina

Located in Bucovina, in the Carpathian foothills, you’ll encounter 48 monasteries built by Stefan the Great. For each of his victorious battles in the 14th and 15th centuries, he built churches and monasteries throughout Moldavia. Descendants continued his work and today, you can experience four-dozen of these exceptional structures, which are among the most fascinating sights in the country. Seven of them are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Maramures villages

Located in the northwestern part of Romania, you’ll find villages whose townspeople still practice centuries-old traditions today. From the rural culture and crafts, to unique and elaborate wooden architecture, hand-woven carpets and the embroidered clothing worn by the locals – these villages are a must-see during your Romania train travel adventure.

Danube Delta

An outdoor enthusiast’s paradise, the mighty Danube River offers much to be explored. It boasts the highest concentration of bird colonies in Europe, not to mention an abundance of fish, animals and 1,700 plant species. Plan an excursion or river cruise and see the splendor of Mother Nature.

Black Sea resorts.

This is where sand and sun come together with ancient monuments, rolling vineyards and modern resorts – making it a perfect vacation destination. The country’s top Black Sea resorts include Mamaia, Eforie, Neptun, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and Mangalia.

When to travel to Romania

So, when’s the best time to put those Romania train tickets to use? May and June are popular months to visit, as well as September and early October. The Black Sea resorts get very crowded from late June through mid-August. If you love skiing, you may be able to endure the harsh winters here.
