Ten things to experience in Slovenia
Postojna Cave
Discover over 12 miles of passages, galleries and chambers in what is the most visited show cave in Europe. Here, you’ll hop on a cave train and uncover a hidden, dazzling natural world, including glistening stalactite formations. You can also see a collection of cave animals.
Predjama Castle
Just a few miles from the cave is this centuries-old castle, perched high atop a 400-foot cliff. Today, you can see the renovated castle rooms and furnishings, including the living quarters, chapel and dungeon. The fascinating objects include weapons, oil paintings and a Pietà dating from 1420. Be sure to take in the views from the observation post on the rocky cliff and legendary Erazem’s Tunnel.
Bled Castle
Take a plenta (special boat only known in this region) to the only real island in Slovenia. Here, you’ll see symbolic Bled Castle, a picturesque and historic backdrop to romantic Bled Island. Be sure to check out the terraces, which offer spectacular views.
Vintgar Gorge
Also located in Bled, you can take a guided trail tour on the bridges above this picturesque gorge, which ends in a stunning waterfall. The trail also leads to breathtaking views of the area.
Ljubljana Zoo
Part of a protected natural park, this zoo boast a menagerie of wild animal species from the Alpine, Pannonian and Mediterranean regions, all living in their natural environments.
Ljubljana Castle
One of the most spectacular sights in the city, this castle dates back to the 15th century, with many of the castle building rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries. This is a major tourist attraction and plays host to many cultural events like concerts, theatre performances, exhibitions and more.
Skocjan Caves Regional Park
Located on the main Karst plateau in the southwest of Slovania, these vast caves with their underground halls and gorges boast unique natural beauty and cultural heritage, they’re also the world’s largest underground wetlands.
Lipica Studfarm
Most famous for its Lipizzaner horses, this medieval farm estate is open to visitors year round. Be sure to visit in the summer season, when there are plenty of events showcasing the horses.
Savica Waterfall
Located on Bohinj Lake, this is the most famous Slovenian waterfall and is a must see during your Slovenia rail travel getaway.
Celje Regional Museum (and palace)
Located in Celje by the Savinja River is a treasure trove of history dating from prehistoric times up to WWI. You’ll also experience the late Renaissance palace called the Old Manor House, with its collection that spans the 13th century to the end of the 19th century.
When to travel to Slovenia
So, when is the best time to use that Slovenia Rail Pass? Summer brings a lot of events in the tourist hot spots, but it also brings crowds. April and May is a great time to visit, the highland meadows are in bloom and you’ll enjoy off-season rates. If skiing is your thing, you can hit the many ski resorts in wintertime.
