Frequently Asked Questions

How much luggage is allowed on the trains?

You are expected to carry your luggage on the trains on a self-service basis. We recommend that you travel light!

Usually there are no weight limitations on baggage, except on high-speed trains or some of the special overnight trains. On the Eurostar, Thalys and TGV, each passenger may take along 2 large pieces of luggage and a single piece of hand luggage.

Most trains have an overhead storage rack along with luggage areas at the end of the car. Baggage is the sole responsibility of the traveler. The railroads will assume no responsibility in case of loss or theft. We advise you to always keep an eye on your luggage in the trains and on the platforms. In night trains it is normally possible to lock your cabin.

Many train stations have luggage lockers (see example in Austria) and/or a left luggage facility. Bigger stations have luggage carts/trolleys on the platforms, for which you sometimes have to pay a small deposit.
