Interview

Eurail.Com got to interview Dalene and Peter about their travel experience and the prospect of seeing Europe by train. Find out what they said...

Tell us something about yourself…
We are Dalene and Peter Heck, a Canadian couple who has sold everything and been on the road since 2009! After eighteen months in South and Central America, we are currently enjoying a long-awaited exploration of Europe.

What experience do you have as travel writers?
We write about our travels at www.hecktictravels.com. Our blog is our story, told through words, photos and some videos, focusing on our experiences as we make our way around the globe, with the odd travel tip thrown in! Dalene has also done destination reviews and articles for other websites.

Why are you excited to travel with a Eurail pass?
Croatia and Italy are both dream destinations, and there is no better way to really see them than to ride the rails through the varied landscapes of coastline, countryside and city. We are excited to experience places we’ve never been to, meet new people, and eat a lot of good food!

Have you ever traveled around Europe by train?
Very little! We are currently working our way through Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, and this is our first European train experience.

What do you think the advantages are of exploring Europe by train?
Rushing from place to place is not our style (our blog should more appropriately be named the un-Hecktic Travelers!), and so jumping on planes to jetset around Europe has little appeal for us. Traveling Europe by train allows us to slow things down, and experience places on the map we may otherwise have missed.

What is your plan for this trip?
We are going to start in Split and work our way north and east through Croatia before crossing into Slovenia for a brief stay. After that we will spend the majority of our time in Italy along the Adriatic Coast, finishing in Sicily.

What is your most memorable travel experience to date?
There are so many – it is hard to choose! Our week in the Galapagos Islands was pretty spectacular, our time in Ireland felt very much like being “home”, we loved everything about Argentina, the Netherlands is currently charming our socks off, and Bolivia was our first stop and so will always have a special place in our hearts. As you can see, it is not possible to just name one!
