Train travel options between France and Italy

Waiting at the train station

France and Italy are very popular countries to include on a Eurail trip. If you plan to visit them on your own trip, make sure you understand how travel between these two countries works:

  • All high-speed and night trains in and between France and Italy require an advance reservation. Regional trains do not require reservations.

  • French high-speed TGV trains have a limited seat allocation. It's important that you book these as far in advance as possible. You can reserve trains up to 3 months before your travel date.

  • The Thello night train connecting Paris to Milan, Verona and Venice is not covered by the Eurail pass. However, your Eurail pass will give you a 25% discount on this train.
