1. Florence (Firenze) – Rome (Roma)

Just a short train ride separates two of Italy's most beloved cities, Florence and Rome. In Florence, marvel at the extraordinary architecture of the Il Duomo and check out great Renaissance art from the likes of Michaelangelo. Rome is a mix of ancient relics and cosmopolitan cool – visit the Colosseum and Roman Forum, as well as the tiny sovereign city-state, the Vatican City.

These two capital cities are surprisingly close to travel between by train. Leave the charming canals and cobbled lanes of Amsterdam for the hustle and bustle of Brussels, the administrative center for many international organizations.

4. Madrid – Barcelona

Spain's two largest cities, Madrid and Barcelona are well-connected by the state-of-the-art AVE high-speed train, transporting passengers half way across the country in less than 3 hours. Madrid, the capital, is an easy city to get around with great museums, a picturesque park and affordable Spanish cuisine. Madrid's rival, Barcelona can boast Guadi-inspired Barcelona.
