Romania Itinerary

Start off your journey in Timișoara, the largest city in western Romania. It dates back to the 13^th century and has an old centre filled with historic buildings. Make your way to the green Victoriei Square and check out the Timișoara Orthodox Cathedral, the city’s highest and most impressive building.

Timișoara is a cultural gem with the nickname ‘Little Vienna’. Music and theatre can be found around every corner. For a bit of romance, take a stroll through cozy Roses Park. If you like paintings, check out the Art Museum in the beautiful Baroque Palace.

Sibiu is an idyllic city in the Transylvania region and boasts impressive fortifications, many of which are still visible today. Walk through the city’s Upper Town to find the medieval Grand Square and Brukenthal Palace. This is one of Romania's most important Baroque buildings and houses a National Museum.

On your way to Sibiu, take some time to visit Corvin Castle. This majestic Gothic castle is over 500 years old and still shrouded in legend. To reach it, get off the train in Simeria and switch to a train to Hunedoara, where the castle is located.

Sighișoara is perhaps Romania’s most charming city, thanks to its medieval atmosphere. The Old Citadel has been extremely well preserved and is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Every year in July, Sighișoara hosts a Medieval Festival that brings knights and troubadours back to the city.

Sighișoara’s most important landmark is the old Clock Tower, which is also a museum of history. Nearby, you can find a bust of the city's most famous citizen: Vlad ‘the Impaler’ Dracula, prince of Wallachia and inspiration for the legendary vampire Count Dracula.

The city of Brasov is surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, making it a popular winter sports destination. Main sights include the Black Church, named so after being partially destroyed in a great fire, and Rope Street, the narrowest street in all of Romania. For the best view of Brasov, take a cable car up to Mount Tampa, a small mountain in the middle of the city.

Close to Brasov is the famous Bran Castle, also known as Dracula’s Castle. The fortress marks the border between Transylvania and Wallachia. A little further from Brasov, in the mountain town of Sinaia, you will find Peles Castle. It was built as a summer residence for the Romanian kings and is an absolute must-see!

Bucharest is Romania’s historic capital and is worth exploring for multiple days. Once known as the Paris of the East, you can still find traces of pre-communist beauty in the old Lipscani district. Walk the nearby Calae Victoriei shopping street to see landmarks like the Romanian Atheneum and Revolution Square. On this square, Romanians gathered in 1989 to rise up and put an end to Nicolae Ceausescu’s dictatorship.

Ceausescu left a clear mark on Bucharest, most notably by constructing the immense Palace of Parliament. It’s one of the largest buildings in the world and consists of over a thousand rooms. Take a walking tour through Bucharest to really discover its architectural differences. Visit the Metropolitan Church for some religious splendor and take a stroll through beautiful Cismigiu Garden to enjoy a break from city life.
