Spread some kindness
Here's how to give something back while you’re on vacation
The happiest people are those who make other people happy, so why not spend a day of your vacation putting a smile on someone else’s face? You’ll find plenty of opportunities to hop on a train and spread some kindness across Europe, but here are a few suggestions.
Volunteer your time
There’s always someone out there who could use a helping hand. Use websites like Helpstay, the POOSH or dedicated groups on Facebook to lend your time and talents to big projects. While you’re traveling, you can enquire at the local bar, café or bakery about community projects – or just ask the person you’re sitting next to on the train.
As a tourist, the best thing you can do for a community is put money back into the local economy. Spend a day traveling to small artisan shops for your gift buying or pay a visit to the local farmers’ market and set yourself the task of making an entire meal from regional produce
The same principle applies to your accommodation. Instead of booking a room with a big hotel chain, travel to a small hotel, bed and breakfast or hostel owned by local people. You'll get to meet more travelers like you, and you'll get insider tips on what to see and where to go nearby. #makeeverydaycount
Europe is full of beautiful historical buildings and stunning places of worship, many of which don’t charge an entrance fee but rely on donations for maintenance and restoration. Spend a day looking off the beaten track and keep an eye out for donation boxes to show your appreciation.
Hire a local tour guide
Wherever you’ve chosen to explore, get the most out of your time there by booking yourself on a free walking tour of the city with a self-employed local guide. You’ll go beyond the usual tourist spots and have more chances to ask questions, plus your tips will go direct to your guide.
