Why start a Mobility Project with Eurail?

Today, we face formidable challenges such as the climate crisis, increasing political polarization and a loss of connection between people and our planet. At Eurail, we believe that rebuilding connections is key to tackling the challenges we face on both an individual and societal level. By starting a mobility project with us, you can give your community a ticket to new connections and experiences and the chance to build life skills that will result in a more vibrant and compassionate society.

With our tailor-made offers, participants in your mobility program will experience flexible, convenient and sustainable train travel across Europe for free, using the Eurail Pass. Stepping out of their comfort zone and onto the train, they will have the chance to meet new people and become inspired by Europe’s vast cultural and natural diversity.

What does an Institutional Mobility Project entail?

Through an Institutional Mobility Project with Eurail B.V., you can unlock Europe’s railways for your community to explore at their own pace. Together with our team, you will design a program to distribute impactful train travel experiences with the Eurail Pass.

We offer services such as dedicated invoicing and convenient booking tools for larger order sizes, as well as a hands-on team of specialists who will help you define your initiative’s scope and approach. These services come at no additional expense, and you will be able to procure Eurail Passes at our standard retail pricing. Within a matter of months, your selected participants will set off on their adventures, bringing new skills, perspectives and connections back home.

The European Commission has selected Eurail B.V. as the provider of train travel Passes and related services for the Erasmus+ DiscoverEU program. This initiative aims at supporting 18-year-olds in becoming more independent, developing soft skills and embracing European values through the transformational power of travel.

Since its inception in 2018, the DiscoverEU programme has offered over 350,000 European youth the chance to explore their continent by train. Today, it continues to deliver a groundbreaking impact to Europe’s youth. With its recent incorporation into the Erasmus+ program, the initiative has been recognized as a key driver for Europe’s broader integration.

Ongoing Institutional Mobility Projects

An Institutional Mobility Project can be started with as little as 100 Passes. You will join a myriad of other organizations big and small who are working to build a more innovative, connected, and sustainable society through train travel in Europe.

To better understand the possibilities, please find some examples of ongoing Mobility Projects:

Our existing initiatives include public parties at the municipal, regional, and national level. With your cooperation, we can set up a cost-effective and transparent Mobility Program that contributes to the European Commission's Sustainable Development Goals.

In 2022, the Federal State of Saxony, Germany launched their Saxorail initiative. Modeled on the DiscoverEU program, free Interrail Passes are offered to approximately 700 Saxonians every year. In addition to receiving an Interrail Pass, recipients also receive a travel allowance of €250 to cover some of their food and accommodation expenses. Prior to departure, all participants attend a one-day course about the history, workings and opportunities of the European Union.

“The record participation shows how great the interest is in exploring Europe and experiencing it in personal encounters during the trip. The successful project is an investment in Saxony’s European future and a low-threshold educational offer for young people. I am pleased that our Saxorail program is now making an indispensable contribution to this.” – Katja Meier, former Minister of State for Justice, Democracy, Equality and Europe (2024)

Mobility has become a core component of modern day learning, with field trips and exchange programs providing an exciting and informal way of broadening and applying a curriculum in the real world. However, while studies indicate the positive impacts of international student mobility, the carbon footprint generated by this mobility poses challenges for sustainability.

Eurail B.V. has been at the forefront of promoting sustainable student mobility by train. Using Eurail and Interrail train Passes, students have a flexible, affordable and immersive ticket to Europe’s vast train network. Various institutes have already incorporated Eurail and Interrail Passes into their sustainable mobility strategies, including the US-based Kentucky Institute of International Studies, AIFS Abroad, and Linking Lives L.L.C

If you are looking for a flexible, sustainable and scalable travel solution for your study program, we would be happy to discuss options with you.

Train travel is an opportunity for everyone to broaden their horizons, build life skills and step out of their daily realities. In this spirit, Eurail and Interrail Passes have been adopted by numerous non-governmental organizations to spread mobility experiences to communities all over Europe.

Under DiscoverEU Inclusion Action, an EU-funded program, NGOs can apply for funding to enable young Europeans in their community to travel irrespective of their financial circumstances, accessibility needs, or assistance requirements.

For example, Cipra International started a project with Eurail B.V. called Youth Alpine Interrail (Yoalin) in 2018. The non-profit organization used Interrail Passes to promote usage of public transportation, give young people from Alpine countries the chance to explore their region and facilitate connections between various nationalities from this unique part of Europe. In this effort, they managed to secure financial support from multiple national governmental agencies.

For over 50 years, Eurail B.V. has been leading the effort to unite Europe’s railways and people through our unique Eurail and Interrail train Passes. Along the way, we have been recognized as a driver of European integration, a catalyst in building sustainable travel habits, and a uniquely reputable partner for creating connections that leave lasting impressions.

Our team is eager to join forces with governments at all levels, educational institutions, and other non-governmental actors to foster the power of connections within your communities.
