Maribor, Slovenia

Maribor is the second city of Slovenia and an excellent place to start your itinerary. Climb up to Piramida Hill for a great overlook of the medieval city centre and the nearby Drava river. Afterwards, head down to the Old Town and grab a cup of coffee on Castle Square. On a hot day, go for a relaxing swim at Maribor island.

Some excellent wines are made in the Maribor region and the Old Vine House is the best place to sample them. You will find a 400-year old grapevine here, the oldest in the world still producing grapes.

Visit Maribor at the end of June to enjoy music, dance and theatre in the Lent Festival.

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Slovenia’s capital is a mix of old and new, with some splendid architecture and a surprising amount of green. In the heart of it all is Ljubljana Castle, overlooking the many structures and bridges built by architect Jože Plečnik. The symbol of Ljubljana is a dragon and you’ll see this mythological creature depicted anywhere, most prominently in stone on the famous Dragon Bridge.

Ljubljana is a young and happening place, thanks to its large student population. To discover the city’s underground scene, pay a visit to Metelkova. These former military barracks have been turned into a free zone where you’ll find art galleries, bars and a wide variety of live music.

Lake Bled, Slovenia

A great place to start discovering Slovenia is the stunning Lake Bled (Lesce Bled). The lake and the castle overlooking it can be found in the northeast of the country, close to the borders of Italy and Austria. Take a boat trip to Bled Island and visit the charming Baroque church there.

Right next to the lake you'll find the Triglav National Park. It’s the perfect place to go hiking and enjoy beautiful mountain scenery with some impressive waterfalls. If you’re into extreme sports such as rafting and paragliding, Soča Valley is the place for you!

Piran, Slovenia

The old Mediterranean city of Piran is one of Slovenia’s biggest tourist attractions. Climb the hill above Piran to visit St. George’s Church and look out over the Adriatic Sea. From here, you’ll also have a good view of the Walls of Piran and the city’s narrow, medieval streets.

Piran is an excellent place to unwind and watch the boats roll into the harbor. Go for a drink on Tartini Square, or strap on your scuba tanks and discover the underwater life in the Gulf of Piran.

The train will take you as far as Koper, where you can catch a bus to Piran. This journey should take you 30 minutes at most.
