What is Eurail?
- What is a travel day?
A travel day is a 24 hour period within which you can travel on trains with your Eurail Pass. It lasts from 12:00 a.m. (midnight) to 11:59 p.m. on the same calendar day. On each travel day, you have access to the train networks where your Eurail Pass is valid.
The 7 p.m. rule
The 7 p.m. rule allows you to count only 1 travel day instead of 2 when traveling overnight. This is how it works: if you travel on a train (or multiple trains) that departs after 7 p.m. (19:00) and arrives at its final stop after 4 a.m. (04:00), you only need to enter the arrival date in the travel calendar, even if you leave the train before 4 a.m. This way you get 5 hours of travel for free. This is known as the 7 p.m. rule.
The ÖBB Nightjet between Rome and Munich/Vienna, leaving at 18:58, is also included in the 7 p.m. rule.
Let us give you an example...
Say that your night train departs on a Monday at 19:15 and arrives at its final destination Tuesday at 10:00. You leave the train at 03:00 on Tuesday morning. In this case, you only need to use one travel day – the day of your arrival. You can continue using your Eurail Pass until the end of that travel day (in this case Tuesday, 23:59).
- What does 3, 4, 5, or 8 days within 1 month mean?
A pass with a validity of 3, 4, 5 or 8 days within 1 month means that you're free to choose any 3, 4, 5 or 8 travel days within the overall validity period of 1 month. These travel days are flexible, so you can decide on the go when you use them. Choose the pass with the number of travel days that best fits your travel plans.
Example: You are planning to travel in Italy and visit Rome, Florence, and Venice. You don't need 8 travel days for this trip, because all of these cities can be reached in a day. So instead, you buy a 3 days within 1 month pass, which is cheaper and suits your trip better.
