What makes a Eurail trip special?

There are a lot of valid answers to this question — dynamic cities, incredible cuisine, jaw-droppingly beautiful train views, just to name a few— but in most cases, it all boils down to people. The locals you might meet in a cafe, who offer their suggestions on what to do and see in their city. The chefs and wait staff who prepare and serve regional dishes and the makers selling one-of-a-kind crafts in marketplaces across Europe.

People are the secret ingredient. People make Eurail trips special.

Earlier this year, a few colleagues and I had the chance to meet some of the people who make Europe not only a wonderful place to visit, but a more sustainable and compassionate place to live. In Rome, we visited Cooperativa Coraggio, a farming collective dedicated to environmental education and improving agricultural practices. Later, in Istanbul, we visited a shop run by KEDV, an organisation that supports women’s cooperatives across Türkiye.

As the year winds to a close, it only feels right to share these inspiring places with our travellers, too. That’s why I’ve put together this itinerary, linking Cooperativa Coraggio in Rome to KEDV in Istanbul — an epic journey past the Julian Alps, along the Danube and through five countries.

Trip details

Rome, Italy

Why it's worth visiting:

As memorable as the Colosseum and Pantheon are, Rome is more than ancient landmarks and busy streets. During your visit to the Eternal City, take time to experience another, greener side of the famous destination by exploring a farm that grows food and gives back to its city.

What to do:

  • Cooperativa Coraggio is a 22-hectrare farm dedicated to multifunctional agriculture and environmental education, accessible with public transportation. Take a tour or simply enjoy a picnic on one of the tables that overlooks the farm’s sprawling fields that grow cereals, vegetables and other products.

  • On your way back to Rome’s city center, stop for a slice or two at Bonci Pizzarium, a cult-favourite pizza shop that uses ingredients grown at Cooperativa Coraggio.

  • Round out your agricultural tour of Rome with a stroll around the stalls selling fruits, vegetables and more at the Campo dei Fiori Market in the city center.

Suggested route

  • From: Roma Termini
  • To: Verona Porta Nuova
  • Average travel time: 3 hours, 18 minutes

Verona, Italy

Why it's worth visiting:

Slow Travel can be practiced anywhere, but from personal experience, it’s especially valuable in a place like Verona. Spend time simply wandering its medieval streets and admiring the architecture — below, you’ll find a few of the places I stumbled upon during my walks around the city.

What to do:

  • Book lovers of any age — but especially those with kids — will love L'Aquilone Libreria per Ragazzi, a children’s bookshop in the city center.

  • 10 minutes away is Bottega Della Gina, a portal to pasta heaven. The shop is best known for its fresh tortellini, offered in over a dozen varieties.

  • For a memorable night out in Verona, check to see if there’s a concert scheduled during your trip at the nearby Castello Scaligero, a castle-turned-music venue accessible by bus from Verona.

Suggested route

  • From: Verona Porta Nuova
  • To: Ljubljana
  • Average travel time: 6 hours, 37 minutes
  • Transfers: 1
  • Seat reservations: Required

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Why it's worth visiting:

You’ll notice the landscape become greener and lusher as you travel from Italy to Slovenia, disembarking in its capital city, Ljubljana. With over 500 square meters of green space per resident, it’s a place to relax and unwind amid the city’s abundant nature.

What to do:

  • Catch a bird’s eye view of the city with a walk or funicular ride up to Ljubljana Castle, perched on a hill overlooking the center.

  • Browse the outdoor Central Market for seasonal snacks to take on your next train ride; on my last visit, strawberries were in season, and I purchased a carton to share among my travel companions.

  • If time allows, take a day trip to Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj, easily accessible by train and bus from Ljubljana.

Suggested route

  • From: Ljubljana
  • To: Graz Hbf
  • Average travel time: 3 hours, 7 minutes
  • Transfers: 0
  • Seat reservations: Not required

Graz, Austria

Why it's worth visiting:

Next up is Graz, a lush and artistic city in southeastern Austria. Immerse yourself in Graz’s history-steeped streets but be on the lookout for the modern design shops and contemporary architecture that helps define the Styrian capital today.

What to do:

  • Get your bearings with a walk up to the Schlossberg, a mountain with a clocktower that overlooks the city.

  • Come face to face with the city’s “Friendly Alien” — a nickname for the uniquely-shaped Kunsthaus Graz, a museum of contemporary art.

  • Dive deeper into the Graz’s creative culture by booking a tour or a workshop at tag.werk, a youth employment project that runs monthly creative classes like screen-printing and card-making.

Suggested route

  • From: Graz Hbf
  • To: Budapest-Kelenfoeld
  • Average travel time: 5 hours, 36 minutes
  • Transfers: 1
  • Seat reservations: Not required

Budapest, Hungary

Why it's worth visiting:

Budapest, located in northern Hungary with ample train connections, is up next. One of the cities I visited on my first Eurail trip, beautiful Budapest has a way of attracting first-time Eurailers and return travelers again and again.

What to do:

  • Experience life on both sides of the Danube with a stroll across the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, and up to Buda Castle.

  • You’re midway through your trip — and if you’re in need of an energy boost, make a beeline to New York Café, Gerbeaud, or another of Budapest’s famously ornate coffee houses.

  • Searching for a souvenir? Look no further than Budapest’s Central Market Hall, where you can browse for gifts and afterwards enjoy local specialties such as goulash and lángos.

Suggested route

  • From: Budapest-Keleti
  • To: Vidin
  • Average travel time: 18 hours, 18 minutes (includes night train)
  • Transfers: 1
  • Seat reservations: Required

Vidin, Bulgaria

Why it's worth visiting:

After crossing a wide swath of Romania, you’ll reach Vidin — like Budapest, the Bulgarian city is also situated along the mighty Danube. Take your time and explore Vidin’s historical landmarks and then treat yourself to a day trip to experience one of Bulgaria’s most impressive natural formations.

What to do:

  • Walk along Vidin’s riverfront — you can’t miss Baba Vida Fortress, a massive castle situated along the Danube.

  • Don't leave without trying banitsa, a Bulgarian pastry dish found in restaurants across Vidin.

  • Make a day trip out to the Belogradchik Rocks, a unique, 230-million-year-old rock formation (with cave art!) accessible by bus from Vidin.

Suggested route

  • From: Vidin
  • To: Sofia
  • Average travel time: 5 hours
  • Transfers: 1
  • Seat reservations: Not required

Sofia, Bulgaria

Why it's worth visiting:

Thought you were done with Roman ruins after leaving Rome? Think again — Sofia is home to the ruins of Serdica, a Roman city founded in 2000 BCE. Yet the ruins are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to everything Sofia has to offer.

What to do:

  • Savor traditional Bulgarian cuisine at Staria Chinar and Pod Lipite, a restaurant which produces almost all of its ingredients at a nearby farm.

  • Slow down and relax at the Crystal Garden, a park popular among locals and travelers alike.

  • Your final train journey is looming, and it’s a long one: stop by Tsentralni Hali to fuel up and purchase some snacks for your time onboard the train.

Suggested route

  • From: Sofia
  • To: Halkali
  • Average travel time: 14 hours, 36 minutes (includes night train)
  • Transfers: 0
  • Seat reservations: Required

Istanbul, Turkey

Why it's worth visiting:

Your trip culminates in Istanbul, the second-most visited city in the world. But despite the city’s sprawl, it’s not difficult to find quiet, meaningful moments — especially when you seek out purpose-led places like Nahıl, a shop that sells handcrafted goods created by women across Türkiye.

What to do:

  • Shop for hand-crafted ceramics, textiles, jewelry and other gifts at Nahıl, a shop run by an organisation called Kadın Emeğini Değerlendirme Vakfı. “Women producers come and get support to develop their products,” said Gokcen Durutas, responsible for communications and fundraising at KEDV. “Each product has a different story of women's empowerment.”

  • Navigate Istanbul using its vast network of public transit options, including ferries. On our visit to Istanbul, we crossed the Bosphorus several times, even catching a waterside sunset from the ferry boat.

  • Feeling the urge to keep traveling? From Istanbul, you can reach Ankara (and all of the smaller cities you pass along the way) in under 4.5 hours. From Ankara, you can embark on the Dogu Express, a famously scenic train that takes travelers all the way across the country, along the Euphrates River, to Kars.
